Over the years, Fuzhou's economy has grown consistently and rapidly, its social undertakings have made an all-round progress. The comprehensive strength of its economic and social development has moved the city to the top of Fujian Province. Meanwhile its sp orts have also made considerable development.

　　Booming of public sports: there is 1 national level fitness sports center-Jinshan Fitness Activity Center, 9 provincial or city level national fitness sports centers, and over 400 fitness routes in various urban areas. With the popularity of various fitness activities, the number of people who regularly take part in sports activities accounts for over 35% of the city's total population. Fuzhou has been awarded with the honor of Excellent Organizer of National Fitness Activity Week for 6 consecutive years, Advanced City of National Physical Fitness Monitoring, and the first prize in the comprehensive evaluation in implementing the National Fitness Program in Fujian Province.

　　With the approach of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Fuzhou has initiated the program of "National Fitness with Olympic". Five sports competitions such as "10000 People Go on a Healthy Walk", "2007 Rongxin Cup" Traditional Dragon Boat Race, "CCTV Haier Olympic City Tour-Fuzhou", as well as 2007 National Swimming Championship and Qualification Tournament for the 2008 Olympics, have been successfully held, thus creating a favorable atmosphere of "Welcome the Olympics, Improve Manners and Foster New Attitudes".

　　Great achievements in competitive sports: over the years, sports training departments at various levels have selected 485 top athletes for Fujian Provincial Sports Team, 620 for Fujian Provincial Sports School and over 130 for People's Liberation Army sports team and various sports colleges.

　　A group of excellent athletes have emerged and won 46 champions at various international, Asian and national competitions.

　　The remarkable competitive sports records rank Fuzhou at the top of the province. In the 2002 and 2006 Provincial Sports Meetings, Fuzhou sports delegation won three "No. 1", namely "total team scores, total gold medals and excellent sports moral". In the Tenth National Sports Meeting of 2005, Fuzhou athletes won 8 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 6 bronze medals, accounting for 40% of the medals gained by the province, therefore Fuzhou was awarded with "Outstanding Contribution Award in the Tenth National Sports Meeting" by Fujian Provincial Sports Bureau. In the Sixth National Urban Sports Games of 2007, Fuzhou athletes won 8 gold medals, 6 silver medals and 4 bronze medals and the team honor of Sports Morality Award Delegation. The number of gold medals gained by Fuzhou ranked the city 8th and 6th among the 74 participating cities and the 27 participating capital cities respectively.
