
Xiamen City is located along China's southeast coast and planted
at the mouth of Jiulong River, with its back against Zhangzhou and Quanzhou
plain and Kinmen i
slands a few kilometers off shore, facing Taiwan Island and
Penghu islands across the Taiwan Strait. After the founding of the People's
Republic of China, Xiamen was a prefecture-level city of Fujian Province. Xiamen
Special Economic Zone was established in 1980 and then Xiamen was designated as
a vice-provincial level city in 1994 including such 6 administrative districts
as Siming, Huli, Jimei, Haicang, Tong'an and Xiang'an, the total resident
population of the city was 2.43 million according to 2007 census.
Xiamen City is composed of Xiamen Island, Gulangyu Island, coastal regions
at the north bank of Jiulong River and Tong'an District. with a land area of
about 1,565 km2 and a sea area of more than 300 km2, Xiamen is recognized as an
international scenic port city. The main part of Xiamen-Xiamen Island, covering
an area of about 132.5 km2, is the fourth largest island of Fujian Province and
enjoys long and winding coastline with a total length of 234 km. Numerous
islands are dotted beyond Xiamen Harbor with the surrounding of mountains.
Xiamen Harbor is of natural strait-type, with deep water and ice-free all year
round, serving as an important port for foreign trade along China southeast
coast in history.
Xiamen enjoys a beautiful environment and Xiamen residents adopt an honest
and simple life style. It has won the titles of "National Model City of Social
Development", "National Sanitary City", "National Garden City", "National Model
City for Environmental Protection", "Excellent Tourism City of China",
"International Garden City". Xiamen is also one of the Top 10 Tourism Cities of
China and one of the ports that receive the most international cruisers in
China.
Xiamen has turned into the most dynamic central city along China's
southeast coast since the implementation of the reform and opening-up policy
over 2 decades ago. In 2007 Xiamen accomplished preliminarily a GDP of 137.526
billion Yuan and a per capita GDP of 56,595 Yuan (equivalent to 7,398 USD), an
increase of 11.3% compared with that of the previous year. The city's total
financial revenue was 34.844 billion Yuan, a net growth of 8.109 billion Yuan
compared with that of the previous year.
Xiamen is a modern, vigorous and open city. Its favorable business
environment has contributed much to the rapid development of Xiamen's economy.
As of today, Xiamen, as one of the key port cities of China, has established
economic relations with more than 180 countries and regions around the world.
Numerous well-known multinational companies such as GE, Kadak, Dell, Boeing,
Wal-mart, ABB, Philips, NEC, TDK have made their presence established their
headquarters in Xiamen. According to statistics, 31 of the global Fortune 500
enterprises have funded 48 projects in Xiamen from electric equipment, plane
maintenance to electronics and machinery. Foreign-funded enterprises serve as a
might pillar for the economic development in Xiamen, achieving 84% of the city's
industrial production value, 65% of export volume and 40% of tax payment.
Over the years, exhibition and event industry has developed rapidly in
Xiamen, creating a great number of well-known exhibition brands. On Sep. 8 the
"golden key" of the annual CIFIT (China International Fair for Investment &
Trade) opens the gate to fortune, a grand gathering for the global financial
investors in Xiamen. Xiamen has successfully held the event for 11 years and
