Great attention has been paid to environmental protection in Fujian, and the air quality is good. There are 64 natural reserves in the province, including seven national-level ones. In 2000 the industrial waste water treatment rate reached 90.34%, 80.83% of the discharged industrial waste water met environmental standards, and waste gas treatment rate reached 92.41%.
Fujian has 9,807 public health institutions of various kinds, including 1,323 hospitals and clinics and 101 sanitation and anti-epidemic stations. First-Aid centers have been set up at provincial level and in seven municipalities.
